This paper examines the 2021 Vietnamese fan-subtitled version of 1408 (2007), focusing on its production context, distribution channels, and linguistic choices. While the film was originally released with official Vietnamese subtitles for cinema and DVD, the 2021 “vietsub” reappeared on non-commercial platforms, driven by a niche horror fan community. Using qualitative analysis of subtitle timing, translation equivalence, and viewer comments, this study argues that the 2021 version reflects a shift toward decentralized, user-generated media access in Vietnam, particularly during COVID-19 lockdowns.
