He looked at his partner. The big Rottweiler was licking the girl's ear, his tail giving a slow, reassuring thump against the pavement. The girl wasn't looking at Miller; she was looking at the dog. The 'Animal' on the force.

"You're okay, kid," Miller said softly, kneeling down. He looked at the tiger, who was watching from the mouth of the alley, handcuffed but weeping silently.

"Good boy, Barnaby," Miller said.

Barnaby didn't look up. He just thumped his tail again. He was doing the work that words couldn't do. In this city, sometimes the only law that mattered was the one written in blood and bone, and sometimes, the only badge a victim trusted was the one worn by a beast.

The sirens wailed in the distance, coming to take over the scene. Miller wiped the sweat from his forehead.
