Western viewers expecting a tame romance should be warned: the first few episodes feature genuinely scary ghosts. The demon Mu-young, with his pale skin and unnatural movements, is a memorable antagonist. The series does not shy away from the tragic violence of Joseon-era justice.

The story follows Arang (Shin Min-ah), a wandering ghost who has no memory of how she died. Determined to discover her identity, she stumbles upon Eun-oh (Lee Joon-gi), a cynical, brooding nobleman who has the supernatural ability to see and hear ghosts—a curse he despises. Arang and the Magistrate isn’t perfect. The CGI is dated (the "underworld" looks like a 2000s music video), and the love triangle is frustrating. But what it lacks in polish, it makes up for in heart.

It’s a story about unfinished business—not just for ghosts, but for the living. It asks: What is more painful, losing someone you love, or never getting to say goodbye?
