Your assistant manager has a 5 for Judging Player Ability? Not anymore. The editor lets you change staff attributes, preferred formations, tactical styles, and even their non-playing roles (e.g., turning a GK Coach into a Head of Youth Development).
This paper investigates the Football Manager 2023 (FM23) In-Game Editor, a paid downloadable tool that allows players to modify virtually every data point within the game’s database. While the core Football Manager experience is predicated on long-term strategic planning, resource scarcity, and the acceptance of probabilistic outcomes (e.g., player injuries, transfer failures), the editor introduces a radical form of "god mode." This research asks: How does the use of the in-game editor alter player agency, narrative construction, and the perceived legitimacy of achievement within a simulation genre? Drawing on qualitative player testimonies from online forums (Reddit, Sports Interactive Community) and autoethnographic gameplay analysis, this paper argues that the editor functions as a "double-edged ludic tool." It can enhance creative experimentation and database transparency but simultaneously risks "narrative collapse"—the evaporation of emergent stories that define the series’ appeal. Ultimately, this study positions the FM23 editor as a lens through which to examine broader tensions in simulation games between authentic struggle and frictionless control. football manager 2023 in game editor
