Often, the problem is transient. Do not overcomplicate it.
A surprisingly common fix: GSMX servers use time-based tokens. If your PC clock is wrong by more than 5 minutes, you get Authentication Failed.

Symptoms: A pop-up window with cryptic numbers appears during phone detection. Cause: ADB/Fastboot drivers are missing, or the phone is in a conflicting mode (MTP vs. PTP).
