Hunter x Hunter: Maboroshi no Greed Island is a Japan-exclusive action-adventure game for the Bandai WonderSwan Color (released in 2002). Based on the hit manga/anime by Yoshihiro Togashi, it lets players experience an original story set within the legendary "Greed Island" arc.
Thanks to fan translation efforts, an English patch is now available, making the game fully playable for non-Japanese speakers. "The patched ROM won't boot
Unlike official localizations, fan translations are labors of love. The English patch for Maboroshi no Greed Island was primarily developed by a small, anonymous group known as "Greed Island Decoders" (GID) around 2018-2020, with later updates from Team Spellbound.
These volunteers reverse-engineered the PSP’s proprietary files, extracted thousands of lines of Japanese script, and manually translated them while respecting the tone of the Hunter x Hunter universe (e.g., keeping Hisoka’s schwing-inducing dialogue intact). The patch is currently at version 1.2.1 (as of late 2023), which fixes bugs related to text overflow and a rare crash involving the "Accompany" spell card. "The text is garbled/glitchy
Maboroshi no Greed Island is a retelling of the famous Greed Island arc from the anime/manga. Unlike typical action games, this is a strategic RPG where battles are conducted using a deck of cards. Players collect cards, explore the island, and participate in "Spell Card" battles. It is widely considered one of the best Hunter × Hunter games due to its faithful adaptation of the card mechanics.
Applying the patch transforms Maboroshi no Greed Island from a curiosity into a fully playable, engaging RPG.
