The pilot wastes no time in setting up the catalyst. Hoping to salvage a disastrous family vacation, Stephanie charters a small plane to take them over the Amazon rainforest. The pilot does two things exceptionally well: it grounds the family's reaction in realism (they argue about whether to tell anyone, use their powers for good, or ignore them entirely) and it introduces the antagonist.
Enter Watcher (a mysterious figure played by Tate Donovan). While the Powells are celebrating their newfound gifts, a secondary plot follows a different group: a covert team of "individuals with abilities" who are hunting down anyone affected by the same white light. The episode ends with a chilling confrontation: Watcher calmly injecting a man with powers that cause him to spontaneously combust. The message is clear: the Powells are not special. They are targets.
