The story follows Chihiro, a young woman in her twenties who is tired of the dating game. She’s had her share of bad matches, boring conversations, and men who seemed great on paper but terrible in reality. Enter Yamato.
Yamato is not the ideal boyfriend. He’s blunt, a little bit of a homebody, has the emotional range of a brick wall at times, and his life philosophy seems to be "low effort, low stress." He forgets things. He says the wrong thing. He’d rather play video games than plan a fancy date.
So why does Chihiro keep coming back to him?
Soredemo Ashita mo Kareshi ga Ii isn't for everyone. If you need dramatic confessions and roses, look elsewhere. But if you are in your late twenties (or any age, really) and have ever sighed at a dating app, wondered if "settling" is really that bad, or found yourself loving someone despite their flaws rather than because of their perfection?

1. Kanami (Protagonist)
2. Higuchi (Male Lead)
At first glance, the premise sounds simple. The story follows Rio Yamase, a 26-year-old office worker, and her live-in boyfriend, Shougo Kuze. They are in a stable, long-term relationship. They share meals, split the rent, and have a healthy sex life. On paper, they are perfect. even if he’s annoying.
But Rio has a problem that rarely gets addressed in romance manga: the nagging sense of routine boredom.
Shougo is a good man. He is handsome, loyal, and kind. However, he is also oblivious. He works long hours, falls asleep on the couch mid-conversation, and treats Rio’s emotional labor—planning dates, buying gifts for his family, keeping the apartment tidy—as invisible background noise.
The manga does not feature a villain trying to steal Shougo away. There is no sudden amnesia or secret twin brother. Instead, the conflict is internal and existential: Can Rio stay in this relationship without losing herself? And can Shougo learn to see her as a person, not just a "girlfriend"?
The narrative smacks you in the face with reality in Chapter 1. Rio’s monologue sets the tone: “I love him. I really do. But when I think about doing this same thing for the next fifty years… my chest hurts.”
The magic of this manga is in its title—specifically the word "Soredemo" (Even so/But still) .
Every chapter presents a scenario where a "perfect" boyfriend would act one way, and Yamato acts the complete opposite.
And yet. Soredemo. Chihiro chooses him. Not because she has low standards, but because she realizes that love isn't a checklist. It's a feeling of comfort. It’s laughing at his stupid jokes at 11 PM. It’s the quiet security of knowing he’s not going anywhere, even if he’s annoying.
