The Process:

Because the official firmware is outdated (running Android 5.1 at best), many enthusiasts turn to Custom ROMs to bring the device closer to modern standards.

The Minix Neo X8-H remains a capable legacy media player when kept on final official firmware (008 KitKat 4.4.2) , which offers stability, full hardware acceleration, and proper audio passthrough. While custom ROMs exist, they are not recommended for users needing reliability. Regular firmware updates are no longer available from Minix, but the existing stable versions ensure the device still functions well for local media playback, retro emulation, and lightweight streaming apps. The MINIX NEO X8-H remains a piece of hardware history. Its firmware journey—from the official KitKat builds optimized for XBMC to the community-driven Lollipop ports—showcases the lifecycle of Android devices. Whether you are restoring it to factory settings or experimenting with custom ROMs, the X8-H is a testament to a time when TV boxes were built like tanks. No custom recovery exists for this device –

Before downloading anything, note that Minix Neo X8-H firmware is not interchangeable with the X8-H Plus model. The standard X8-H uses an Amlogic S802-H chip, while the Plus uses an S812. Installing the wrong firmware will brick your device.
