While Mongolia is home to majestic large mammals such as the Wild Ass (Khulan), the Wolf, and the Brown Bear, the title of the "largest animal" belongs to the Bactrian Camel. Specifically, Mongolia holds the distinction of being the last stronghold for the critically endangered Wild Bactrian Camel, as well as maintaining a significant population of domesticated Bactrian camels.

Mongolia is landlocked and has no large marine life. The largest fish in Mongolian rivers and lakes (e.g., Lake Khövsgöl) is the Siberian grayling or Lenok, rarely exceeding 8 kg (18 lbs). The largest bird is the Cinereous vulture (Aegypius monachus), with a wingspan of 3 meters (10 feet), but it weighs only 7–14 kg (15–31 lbs). Neither competes with a 900 kg camel. mongoliin hamgiin tom amitan

In the northernmost taiga forests of Khövsgöl and Selenge provinces, the moose (Alces alces) appears. A male moose can weigh up to 700 kg (1,540 lbs) and stand 2.3 meters at the shoulder. However, moose are extremely rare in Mongolia (only a few hundred individuals), and their range is marginal. Some argue the moose could rival the camel, but because they are not year-round resident giants of the steppe/Gobi core, the camel retains the title.
