The New Group Reading Test (NGRT) is a standardized, termly assessment designed to monitor the reading attainment of students. Unlike phonics screening checks which focus solely on decoding, the NGRT measures both decoding ability and reading comprehension.

For Year 2 students (typically aged 6-7), this is a pivotal transition year, moving from Key Stage 1 phonics-based instruction toward more complex text comprehension.

Sam loved the small red kite that his dad had fixed. It bobbed and dipped in the wind like a small bird. One Sunday, Sam and his friend Mia walked to the hill near the old oak tree. “We’ll fly it high,” Sam said. Mia laughed and ran ahead. The wind grew stronger. Sam held the string tight. Suddenly the kite tore on a sharp branch and began to spin. Sam felt sad but he did not give up. He tied a new piece of string, smoothed the rip with tape, and threw the kite into the air again. This time the kite flew higher than before and Sam and Mia cheered.

Jake and Mia made a den with blankets and chairs. They put a torch inside. Then they read a story together. ngrt reading test sample year 2 extra quality
