On the visual side, Pen 15 artists, led by Lado Gudiashvili and Kirile Zdanevich, developed a style that might be termed “urban primitivism.” Rejecting both the academic realism of the Tbilisi Art School and the decorative folklorism of earlier Georgian painters, they drew inspiration from medieval Georgian frescoes, Svanetian tower carvings, and Tbilisi’s own subterranean life—its taverns, bathhouses, and underworld characters. Gudiashvili’s paintings from the Pen 15 period (e.g., “Night at the Ortachala Garden”, 1920) feature elongated, almost puppet-like figures with hollow eyes and contorted limbs, set against dreamlike cityscapes. The color palette is deliberately harsh: acidic yellows, deep ochres, and bruised purples. The group also produced lithographic posters and illustrated their own poetry collections, using cheap paper and bold, crude lines as a deliberate affront to the polished book arts of the Georgian Golden Age. These artifacts were sold in the Tbilisi bazaar alongside icons and kitchenware, embodying their anti-elitist ethos.
