Bối cảnh: Ngày 4/11/1979, người biểu tình Iran tấn công Đại sứ quán Mỹ tại Tehran, bắt giữ 66 nhân viên làm con tin. Tuy nhiên, 6 người đã bí mật trốn thoát và được Đại sứ Canada Ken Taylor bảo vệ.

Kế hoạch "Argo": Để đưa họ ra khỏi Iran, điệp viên CIA Tony Mendez (Affleck) đã thiết lập một kế hoạch không tưởng: đóng giả làm một đoàn làm phim người Canada đang đi tìm bối cảnh cho một bộ phim khoa học viễn tưởng tên là Argo.
