Unlike its predecessors, Shin Sangoku Musou 5 introduced a completely revamped character design system and the controversial but fluid Renbu System. This system broke the traditional "Charge Attack" chain, allowing for infinite combos that grew more complex as the player's momentum increased.

The Special version on PSP is widely regarded as superior to the standard PS2 port due to its inclusion of characters that were cut from other versions, bringing the roster to a massive size. It features the tactical "Target" system, where completing specific objectives during battle alters the flow of history and unlocks new items and weapons.
