To understand ST4, you have to understand the problem it solved. Before the "ST" series, 3D modeling was a battle between two philosophies:

Solid Edge ST4 was the version where Synchronous Technology truly came into its own. It combined the best of both worlds. ST4 allowed users to grab a face of a 3D model, drag it, and have the software intelligently figure out how the surrounding geometry should adapt—without breaking the model's history tree. It was "design without fear," allowing for rapid changes that would have destroyed a traditional parametric model.
