Note: This workaround does not apply to the portable version, but many users confuse the two. If you are running the installed version of Solar Putty (via MSI), try this:

This tells Solar Putty to use the installed WinSCP instead of trying to download portable libraries.

Since Solar-Putty cannot download automatically in a restricted/portable environment, you manually place the required files.

Steps:

  • Restart Solar-Putty → It will detect local WinSCP libraries and stop trying to download.
  • Fully portable, no internet required, works on locked-down systems.

Developers sometimes break auto-download features when upstream hosts change URLs.

⚠️ Note: Some older Solar Putty versions (pre-2020) hardcoded a WinSCP download link that is now defunct.

When using Solar-Putty in portable mode, it might have limited rights or specific paths where it can write or read files. Make sure:

Even "portable" apps can fail if placed in system-protected folders.

Fix: Move the entire Solar Putty folder to C:\Users\Public\PortableApps\ and re-copy the Library folder.

To fix this, you simply need to provide the WinSCP libraries manually. You do not need to install WinSCP on your computer; you just need the portable binaries.
