The Sega logo appeared, but the iconic "SE-GA!" chant was pitched down, sounding like a growl. When the title screen flared to life, it wasn’t Sonic or Knuckles standing there. It was just the background of Mushroom Hill Zone, stripped of its sprites. I pressed start.
The game didn't play like Sonic. There were no rings, no Badniks, and no music. Just the rhythmic thump-thump of Sonic’s footsteps. My computer restarted. When it came back, the .bin file was gone. But every icon on my desktop had been replaced with a tiny, pixelated Golden Ring. I clicked one, and it made the "loss of rings" sound effect before deleting itself.
