क्रिस गार्डनर एक सेल्समैन है जो अस्थि घनत्व स्कैनर (bone density scanner) बेचता है। उसकी पत्नी लिंडा डबल शिफ्ट करती है, लेकिन फिर भी किराया और टैक्स बकाया है। लिंडा थककर उसे छोड़कर न्यूयॉर्क चली जाती है। क्रिस अपने बेटे क्रिस्टोफर के साथ रहता है।
एक दिन क्रिस एक अमीर आदमी को फेरारी से उतरते देखता है और पूछता है – “क्या करते हो और कैसे?” वह आदमी कहता है – “स्टॉक ब्रोकर।” क्रिस डीन विट्ट कंपनी में इंटर्नशिप के लिए अप्लाई करता है, हालाँकि उसकी शैक्षिक पृष्ठभूमि कमजोर है।
इंटर्नशिप भुगतान रहित (unpaid) है और 6 महीने की है, जिसके बाद केवल एक व्यक्ति को नौकरी मिलती है। पत्नी के चले जाने के बाद, क्रिस और उसका बेटा बेघर हो जाते हैं। वे रातें शेल्टर, स्टेशन, टॉयलेट (सबवे स्टेशन) में बिताते हैं।
फिर भी क्रिस हार नहीं मानता। वह अपने बेटे से कहता है –
“कोई तुमसे नहीं कहेगा कि तुम क्या बन सकते हो… मैं तो यही कहूंगा – अपने सपनों की रक्षा करो।”
आखिरकार क्रिस इंटर्नशिप पूरी करता है और उसे Dean Witt में नौकरी मिल जाती है। वह फूट-फूट कर रोता है – सफलता के आँसू। वह बाद में एक सफल उद्यमी बनता है।
