With the launch of the legendary TomTom GO (2004), TomTom introduced a logical versioning system: v (version) + year identifier. This is when "Map Version" became a marketing term. This was TomTom’s golden age
TomTom releases new maps every week. However, "Weekly Maps" are usually just speed camera and small road changes. A "major version" (a full map overhaul) is released roughly once per quarter. and cloud navigation (TomTom Maps APIs).
Shift to periodic digital updates (2000s–2010s): More frequent releases (quarterly/monthly); online update distribution via TomTom HOME and MyTomTom.
Subscription and Lifetime Maps (2010s): Introduction of paid subscriptions and “Lifetime Maps” bundled with devices; product marketing used terms like “Map Share” and “HD Traffic.”
TomTom HOME → MyDrive/MyTomTom (mid-2010s): Transition to cloud-linked profiles, device sync, and more frequent map pushes.
Frequent regional releases (2010s–present): Monthly or quarterly map updates with incremental changes, POI updates, and improved roadworks/turn restrictions.
Shift to online services & maps-as-a-service: Map data increasingly integrated into apps, SDKs, and cloud navigation (TomTom Maps APIs).
