Because Ren’Py is predominantly portable (no central installer on Mac/Linux and a basic installer on Windows), a simple drag-and-drop to the trash is 80% effective. The remaining 20% requires manual cleanup.
Ren’Py doesn’t install itself in the traditional sense (no registry entries on Windows, no system files). It runs as a portable application. That means uninstalling is usually just deleting the folder. However, there are a few extra places to check for a clean removal.
rm -rf ~/RenPy.app ~/Library/RenPy ~/Library/Preferences/org.renpy.renpy.plist uninstall renpy
Windows: Delete folder + %APPDATA%\RenPy.
Ren'Py is a "portable" application, meaning it doesn't use a traditional installer that adds entries to your system's "Add or Remove Programs" list. To uninstall it, you must manually delete its files from various locations on your drive. 1. Delete the SDK / Launcher Folder
The main engine files are contained entirely within the folder you originally extracted.
Windows/Linux: Locate the renpy- folder and delete it. Use pkill or close the terminal window running Ren’Py
macOS: If you moved it to your Applications folder, drag the Ren’Py folder to the Trash. If it's still appearing as a "drive," unmount the DMG file. 2. Remove Global Preferences and Save Data
Ren'Py stores configuration settings (like launcher language) and game progress in system-specific folders outside the main SDK folder.
Windows: Press Win + R, type %appdata%, and delete the RenPy folder.
macOS: Open Finder, press Cmd + Shift + G, and go to ~/Library/RenPy/ to delete it. Windows: Delete folder + %APPDATA%\RenPy
Linux: Look for .renpy in your home directory (e.g., ~/.renpy/) and remove it. 3. Clear Individual Project Files
If you created games using the launcher, those projects are often stored in a separate "projects directory" you chose during setup.
A simple restart releases file locks held by the OS or other programs.
