Once downloaded, the installation process mirrors the standard method, but with added benefits.

Many users fear that "custom images" require a paid support contract. They do not. The ISO is available for free to anyone with a free VMware Customer Connect account.

Avoid third-party sites. Always use these official prefixes:

Every few months, a new HPE Custom ISO is released. Repeat the download process above to get a fresh ISO with all patches slipstreamed.

After the server restarts, you’ll see the ESXi Direct Console User Interface (DCUI).

  • Test Connectivity
From another PC, open a browser and go to https://[your-server-ip] – accept the self-signed certificate.

  • Enable Free License

  • | Issue | Solution | |-------|----------| | HPE site says “entitlement required” | Try a different server model search, or use the generic “VMware ESXi 7.0 HPE Custom Image” without specifying a model. | | ISO won’t boot on older HPE server | Check server compatibility – Gen8 and older may not support ESXi 7 (dropped drivers). | | Free license key rejected | Use VMware’s official free key (they change occasionally). Get from my.vmware.com after free registration. | | HPE drivers missing after install | You downloaded the wrong ISO (generic VMware). Redownload from HPE. |

As of late 2023, VMware has transitioned to Broadcom. The download portal has undergone changes, but the process generally follows these steps:

You can download VMware ESXi 7 ISO images and HPE-customized ESXi 7 images for HPE servers; HPE provides a customized offline bundle/ISO that adds drivers and hardware management agents. VMware’s standard ESXi 7.0 ISO is freely downloadable for evaluation (requires VMware account); HPE custom images are available from HPE’s support/download site (requires HPE account). Licensing: ESXi can be installed and used without a paid license for basic functionality for a limited time, but to remove feature limits or for production support you need a VMware license and/or HPE support agreement.
