Winbox 3.28 May 2026

Many industrial and WISP installations run ancient hardware (RB133, RB433, x86 with RouterOS 5.x). WinBox 3.28 is the last version that fully supports legacy wireless drivers and older interface naming conventions (prism, atheros).

Note: MikroTik no longer hosts 3.28 on its official site (only latest version). It exists in third-party archives or old backups.

Running it:

The UI uses a left-hand menu tree identical to RouterOS CLI structure:

If you are a network administrator or a MikroTik enthusiast, you likely have the Winbox executable sitting on your desktop or USB toolkit. It is the go-to tool for configuring RouterOS devices, and while MikroTik is often focused on their rapid RouterOS updates, the utility itself receives updates from time to time. winbox 3.28

Recently, MikroTik officially rolled out Winbox version 3.28. While it isn't a radical visual overhaul, it brings necessary quality-of-life improvements and, most importantly, security alignments that make it a must-download for anyone managing production networks.

Here is what you need to know about the latest release.

Winbox 3.28 is a Windows-based graphical configuration utility for MikroTik RouterOS devices. It provides a fast, lightweight interface for managing routers, switches, and wireless devices running RouterOS. Winbox communicates with devices over TCP (typically via port 8291) and also supports MAC-layer discovery for local network access to devices without IP configuration. As MikroTik pushes RouterOS 7 (v7) towards stability and introduces new features like containers and improved WireGuard implementation, the management protocol has evolved. Winbox 3.28 ensures seamless compatibility with the latest RouterOS v7 Long-term and Stable branches.

Previous versions of Winbox occasionally struggled to display specific new menu items or parameters introduced in RouterOS v7.11 and later. This update resolves those "missing menu" glitches, ensuring you can see and configure all available options.
