Unlike standard Zebra drivers or Zebra Setup Utilities (ZSU), ZTools can send low-level ZPL commands that bypass the printer’s normal operating system. This includes special ^J (device status) and ~HU (full factory reset) commands that can revive corrupted NVRAM.

Hospitals use Zebra DS8100 series scanners to verify patient wristbands. Wristbands are often curved and printed on low-contrast thermal paper. ZTools allows the Biomed team to enable OCR (Optical Character Recognition) alongside barcode decoding, so if the barcode is smudged, the scanner reads the human-readable text as a backup.
