These controllers use a complex address translation layer. When the flash memory degrades or loses power during a write operation, the controller locks itself into a "pretest" or "safe mode." The drive becomes a brick showing 0 MB in Disk Management. Standard Windows formatting tools cannot touch it. Only FirstChip’s proprietary MPTools (Mass Production Tools) can reprogram it.
