Óòîìèòåëüíîå çðåëèùå — ýòîò ïûëüíûé, íàðî÷èòî ìåäëåííûé modern western "Down in the Valley", âûçûâàþùèé ëþáîïûòñòâî ðàçâå ÷òî ïåðñîíîé ðåæèññåðà è ñöåíàðèñòà Äýâèäà Äæåéêîáñîíà: êàê íèêàê, èìåííî åìó ïðåäñòîèò ýêðàíèçèðîâàòü "Ïèêíèê íà îáî÷èíå" áðàòüåâ Ñòðóãàöêèõ. Ëè÷íî ÿ ñêëîíåí äåëàòü íåóòåøèòåëüíûå ïðîãíîçû. Îäíàêî, òóò ó íàñ íå ñîîáùåñòâî ñòàðèêîâ-ëåñîâèêîâ, è âåðíåìñÿ âñå æå ê íàøèì áàðàíàì, òî÷íåå ê òåì, êòî èõ ïîãîíÿåò. Ê êîâáîÿì, êîðî÷å. Öåíòðàëüíûé ïåðñîíàæ êàðòèíû — êîâáîé-áîìæ Õàðëàí (Ýäâàðä Íîðòîí).  íåãî âëþáëÿåòñÿ øêîëüíèöà Òîóá è, êàê ýòî âîäèòñÿ ó ñîâðåìåííîé áåñïðèíöèïíîé ìîëîäåæè, ïîòåðÿâøåé âñÿêèå ñîîáðàæåíèÿ î ìîðàëè, ïðàâîñëàâíîñòè è ñîáîðíîñòè, íåìåäëåííî ñîáëàçíÿåò ýòîãî íàèâíîãî òîùåãî ìóæè÷êà ñ òóïîé óëûáî÷êîé èç-ïîä øèðîêîïîëîé øëÿïû. À îí âðîäå êàê âòðåñêèâàåòñÿ â íåå. Ó Òîóá åñòü ïàïà-ïîëèöåéñêèé è ìëàäøèé áðàò-äåáèë (åãî èãðàåò áðàò Ìàêîëåÿ Êàëêèíà — Ðîðè). Çäåñü Äæåêîáñîí îáðàùàåòñÿ ê òðàäèöèîííîé òåìå "îòöîâ è äåòåé", âûíóæäàÿ ñòðîãîãî îòöà ÷ìàðèòü çàåçæåãî êîâáîèøêó, à â îòíîøåíèè äî÷åðè ïðåäïðèíèìàòü âîñïèòàòåëüñêèå ìåðû. Èíòåðåñíî, ÷òî ðåæèññåð íå ïûòàåòñÿ èçëèøíå çàîñòðÿòü êîíôëèêò. Äðàìàòè÷åñêèå ñöåíû äðàìàòè÷íî íå âûãëÿäÿò, è äàæå êîãäà äóëî ïîëèöåéñêîãî ðåâîëüâåðà ïðèñòàâëÿåòñÿ êî ëáó Õàðëàíà, ñîçäàåòñÿ âïå÷àòëåíèå ïîëíîé áåçîïàñíîñòè, äàæå êàêîé-òî ðóòèííîñòè ïðîèñõîäÿùåãî. Ëþáîâíàÿ ëèíèÿ, òàê æå êàê è òåìà "îòöîâ è äåòåé", ðàñòâîðÿåòñÿ â óíûíèè èçìîæäåííîãî ëåòíèì ñîëíöåì ïðîâèíöèàëüíîãî ãîðîäêà, ðàñïîëîæåííîãî â ïóñòûíå, â äåñÿòêå êèëîìåòðîâ îò ïîáåðåæüÿ îêåàíà. Äàæå ñâîèõ ïåðñîíàæåé ðåæèññåð ëåïèò íàìåðåííî-íåèíòåðåñíûìè, ãëóïîâàòûìè, ñ äàóíè÷åñêè-ïðèîòêðûòûìè ðòàìè, áóäòî ïðèáðåäøèìè â ýòîò ôèëüì èç "Êåí Ïàðêà" Ëàððè Êëàðêà — è çäåñü, è òàì âîñïåâàåòñÿ (âåðíåå, ñ ïðîâèíöèàëüíûì àêöåíòîì íåðàçáîð÷èâî ïðîáóáíèâàåòñÿ) òîñêëèâàÿ æèçíü çàøòàòíûõ ãîðîäêîâ è âå÷íî ñîííûõ èõ æèòåëåé. Íî êîãäà ýòà àïàòèÿ îõâàòûâàåò âñþ áåç èñêëþ÷åíèÿ ñúåìî÷íóþ ïëîùàäêó, à òàêæå ìîíòàæíûé ñòîë, è äàæå, êàê áóäòî, êèíîïëåíêó, êîòîðàÿ ñâîðà÷èâàåòñÿ â òîëñòûé ñîííûé êëóáîê, ñòàíîâèòñÿ, ÷åñòíî ãîâîðÿ, íå ïî ñåáå.  ôèëüìå åñòü òî÷êà ýêñòðåìóìà, äîñòèãíóâ êîòîðîãî, äåéñòâèå íà÷èíàåòñÿ ðàçâèâàòüñÿ, óñêîðÿòüñÿ è ðàñêî÷åãàðèâàòüñÿ, — íî ýòà òî÷êà ýêñòðåìóìà ÿâëÿåòñÿ âèðòóàëüíîé, íåíàñòîÿùåé. Èç ìåëîäðàìû ôèëüì ïðåâðàùàåòñÿ â âåñòåðí èëè äàæå â ïñèõîëîãè÷åñêèé òðèëëåð, íî äåéñòâèå îñòàåòñÿ íà ìåñòå. Êàê ãîâîðÿò ôóòáîëüíûå êîììåíòàòîðû, "èãðîê òîëüêî îáîçíà÷àåò áîðüáó". Ïîýòîìó òðàãè÷åñêèé ôèíàë âîñïðèíèìàåòñÿ ñ ðàäîñòüþ. Íàêîíåö-òî ïîñòàâëåíà òî÷êà, è òû èçáàâëåí îò äàëüíåéøèõ ïñåâäîìó÷åíèé âûìûøëåííûõ ïåðñîíàæåé.

Ôèëüì "Down in the valley", îñòðîóìíî ïåðåâåä¸ííûé ïðîêàò÷èêàìè êàê "Ýòî ñëó÷èëîñü â äîëèíå" âûäàëñÿ ïî-ñâîåìó íåïëîõèì è êàê áîëüøèíñòâî àìåðèêàíñêîãî êèíîïðîäóêòà âíÿòíûì è ¸ìêèì. Íî âîò åãî çàòÿíóòîñòü ïîõåðèëà õîðîøèå êà÷åñòâà. Îäèí èç àòðèáóòîâ õîðîøåãî ôèëüìà — ýòî êðàòêîñòü, ïðè ÷¸ì òóò íåëüçÿ çàáûâàòü ñòàðèêà Ýéíøòåéíà ñ îòíîñèòåëüíîñòüþ. ßñíî, ÷òî èíîé ÷àñîâîé ôèëüì ìîæåò äëèòüñÿ äîëüøå èíîãî ñåðèàëà. Òàê âîò ýòîò ôèëüì â ëó÷øåì èç ìèðîâ áûë áû äëèííåå "Òâèí Ïèêñà".

Íà÷èíàåòñÿ âñ¸ ñ äîòîøíîé îáðèñîâêè ñèòóàöèè.  íåñêîëüêèõ ñöåíàõ íàñ çíàêîìÿò ñ îáèòàþùåé â ïðåêðàñíîé äîëèíå Ñàí-Ôåðíàíäî ñåìü¸é èç òð¸õ ÷åëîâåê — ïàïà, ñûí è äî÷ü. Ãäå ìàòü íåÿñíî, äà ýòî è íåâàæíî. Âàæíî òî, ÷òî îòåö ðàñòèò äåòåé â îäèíî÷êó. È íå ìåíåå âàæíî òî, ÷òî íå îñîáî ó íåãî ïîëó÷àåòñÿ, î÷åâèäíûì ýòî ñòàíîâèòñÿ ïðè âçãëÿäå íà ñûíà Ëîííè (â èñïîëíåíèè åäèíîêðîâíîãî áðàòà Ìàêàëåÿ Êàëêèíà). Òîò õîäèò ìðà÷íûì ïðèâèäåíèåì, áîèòñÿ òåìíîòû, âûõîäèòü ïðåäïî÷èòàåò â îêíî è øàãó íå ìîæåò ñòóïèòü áåç ñåñòðû Òîóá. Îíà äëÿ íåãî îðèåíòèð, ðîëåâàÿ ìîäåëü íà åãî íåë¸ãêîì ïóòè âçðîñëåíèÿ. Êàê ðåçóëüòàò — ïîõîæ îí íà íåêîå áåñïîëîå ñóùåñòâî, à âîâñå íå íà íîðìàëüíîãî àìåðèêàíñêîãî ïîäðîñòêà. Òèïà, êàê ðàñòåíèå âûðîñøåå áåç ñâåòà èìååò ñòðàííûé áåëûé öâåò, òàê è ìàëü÷èê, âûðîñøèé áåç îòöà (íó èëè ñ ïðåçèðàåìûì îòöîì) íå èìåÿ ïðèìåðà ìóæåñòâåííîñòè ïðèíèìàåò ñòðàííûé è íåïðåçåíòàáåëüíûé äëÿ ïðîäîëæåíèÿ ðîäà âèä. Èëè åù¸ èíáðèäèíã — óò¸íîê âîñïðèíèìàåò çà ìàòü-óòêó ïåðâîå óâèäåííîå èì ñóùåñòâî, â èòîãå òóò¸íîê âûðàñòåò òîáàòüêîé, êîòèê — ïîðîñ¸íêîì, à òåëîâåòåê — òåâîòüêîé.

Äî÷ü òîæå íå â âîñòîðãå îò îòöà, íî áóäó÷è ÷åëîâåêîì çíà÷èòåëüíî áîëåå ñàìîñòîÿòåëüíûì, öåëüíûì è ñàìîäîñòàòî÷íûì íå äåìîíñòðèðóåò ýòî ôåíîòèïè÷åñêè:).  êîíöå êîíöîâ îòåö å¸ íå ðîëåâàÿ ìîäåëü, à õàðàêòåð, êîòîðûé îíà áóäåò èñêàòü â áóäóùåì ìóæå.  ïðèíöèïå å¸ ïîâåäåíèå îáû÷íî äëÿ ïîäðîñòêà — äåðçèò, øîêèðóåò, âûïåíäðèâàåòñÿ — âîáùåì âñåìè ñèëàìè äåìîíñòðèðóåò âíóòðåííþþ íåóñòðîåííîñòü è íåóâåðåííîñòü â ñîáñòâåííûõ ñèëàõ. Îòåö íå òî, ÷òîáû êàêîé-òî ïëîõîé, ïðîñòî âîäèò â äîì áàá, âêëþ÷àåò ñòîãà÷à è âîîáùå îí øåðèô. Íàäî ïîíèìàòü, ÷òî áàá ñûí è äî÷ü ðåâíóþò ê ìàòåðè, è êàê ñëåäñòâèå íå äåðæàò îòöà çà àâòîðèòåòà è ñòðîãà÷ åãî âîñïðèíèìàþò êàê ïðåâûøåíèå ïîëíîìî÷èé. Ìîë, êîëè ó ñàìîãî ðûëüöå â ïóõó, òî êòî òû òàêîé ÷òîáû êîìàíäîâàòü?

Îäíàæäû, åäó÷è ñ äðóçüÿìè íà ïëÿæ çàãîðàòü è êóïàòüñÿ äî÷ü âèäèò íà àâòîñòîÿíêå ìèëîãî òèõîãî ìàëü÷èêà 40 ëåò (ïåðåêàòè-ïîëå Õàðëàíà) â èñïîëíåíèè Ýäâàðäà Íîðòîíà. Çàãëÿäåâøèñü íà ñìàçëèâóþ ìîðäàøêó, òðîãàòåëüíóþ è íåóìåñòíóþ êîâáîéñêóþ øëÿïó, â êóïå ñ ìÿãêîñòüþ è ïîäàòëèâîñòüþ, ïîäåë¸ííóþ íà êàêóþ-òî èñêîííóþ äåðåâåíñêóþ ïðî÷íîñòü îíà íå çàìå÷àåò êàê âëþáëÿåòñÿ â íåãî è ïðèãëàøàåò ïîåõàòü íà ïëÿæ. Òîò áåç ëèøíèõ ñëîâ áðîñàåò ðàáîòó è ðâ¸ò ñ íèìè íà ìîðå, êîòîðîãî îí íèêîãäà íå âèäåë. Íà ïëÿæó ïîòðÿñ¸ííàÿ åãî îïàñëèâûì îòíîøåíèåì ê âîäå, Òîóá îáåùàåò ñïàñòè åãî åñëè ÷òî, îíè çàïëûâàþò êóäà ïîäàëüøå è òàìà â îêðóæåíèè âîä, âîäîðîñëè è ÷àåê öåëóþòñÿ ïî-ïåðâîìó. ×åì áîëüøå îíà ñ íèì îáùàåòñÿ, òåì ñèëüíåå îí âèäèòñÿ åé àëüòåðýãîì îòöà è îíà ïîãðóæàåòñÿ â íåãî êàê ðûáêà â ìîðå.

Ïîòîì êàê âîäèòñÿ Õàðëàí çíàêîìèòñÿ ñ áðàòîì è î÷àðîâûâàåò åãî. Øèêàðíàÿ êàðòèíà — ñåñòðà íàøëà ìóæà, áðàò — îòöà. È âñ¸ áû çäîðîâî, êàá íå íàñòîÿùèé îòåö, êîòîðûé âîçâðàùàåòñÿ ñ ðàáîòû è óâèäåâ äîìà ñàìöà-êîíêóðåíòà âêëþ÷àåò ìà÷î è äà¸ò ïîíÿòü, ÷òî òóò òàêèì íå ðàäû. Áîëåå òîãî, êàê øåðèô, íàñìîòðåâøèéñÿ ñàìûõ ðàçíûõ ïåðñîíàæåé, îí âèäèò Õàðëàíà íàñêâîçü ïîëó÷øå ðåíòãåíà è ãîòîâ ïîêëÿñòüñÿ, ÷òî âíóòðè ýòîãî ïàðíÿ íåò íè÷åãî õîðîøåãî. Äî÷ü è ñûí îäíàêî óæå ñäåëàëè âûáîð è ÿñíîçîðêèé îòåö òåðÿåò â èõ ãëàçàõ ïîñëåäíèå ñëåäû àâòîðèòåòà. Íà ñëåäóþùèé æå äåíü Òîóá èñ÷åçàåò íà âñþ íî÷ü — ïü¸ò, ãëîòàåò êîë¸ñà, êîëáàñèò â êëóáå ñ Õàðëàíîì. Ïî å¸ âîçâåðòó îòåö ïûòàåòñÿ ïîãîâîðèòü, íî îäóðåâøåå îò êîë¸ñ è ëþáâè ÷àäî ïîäòîðìàæèâàåò è â ñâî¸ì ïóáåðòàòíîì áóíòå ïðîòèâ "ñèëüíîé ðóêè" çàõîäèò ñëèøêîì äàëåêî. Íå óäàëèâ äåëî òðàäèöèîííûìè ñïîñîáàìè, îòåö òåðÿåò ãîëîâó è â äåëî èäóò ìàò, îñêîðáëåíèÿ è ðóêîïðèêëàäñòâà. Îí íå ïîíèìàåò, ÷òî èñòåðèêàìè äåëó íå ïîìîæåøü. Ñïîêîéíàÿ óâåðåííîñòü è âåñîìîñòü ïîìîãëè áû åìó ïðåäîòâðàòèòü òðàãåäèþ, äà ãäå òàì.

Ìåæäó òåì ãåðîé Íîðòîíà íàéäÿ ñåáå äåâ÷îíêó íå ñîáèðàåòñÿ îñòàíàâëèâàòüñÿ. Ïîãóëÿâ ñ Òîóá, îí ïëîòíî áåð¸òñÿ çà áðàòà. Âåç¸ò åãî çà ãîðîä, îíè ñòðåëÿþò èç ïèñòîëåòîâ, êàòàþòñÿ íà ëîøàäè. Óâåðåííîñòü è ìÿãêîñòü ãåðîÿ Íîðòîíà, åãî âíèìàíèå ê ýòîìó íåîáùèòåëüíîìó, "ëèøíåìó" ìàëü÷èêó íàâñåãäà ïðåâðàùàþò Õàðëàíà â ãåðîÿ Ëîííè. Áîëåå òîãî, âåðíóâøèñü äîìîé îíè çàñòàþò òàì îòöà è òîò ïðèõîä â ÿðîñòü, óâèäåâ, ÷òî óêðàâ äî÷ü íåçíàêîìåö óêðàë è ñûíà. Ñëåäóåò íåëèöåïðèÿòíàÿ ñöåíà, èç êîòîðîé ïîáåäèòåëåì âûõîäèò Õàðëàí. Êîãäà âîçâðàùàåòñÿ Òîóá, åé ñòàíîâèòñÿ èçâåñòíî êàê îòåö ïîñòóïèë ñ Õàðëàíîì. Îíà ñíà÷àëà ïðèõîäèò â íåèñòîâñòâî, ìåæäó íåé è îòöîì ïðîèñõîäèò îðãèÿ íåïîíèìàíèÿ â êîòîðîé îòåö ïûòàåòñÿ å¸ óñïîêîèòü è ïðîñòî ïîãîâîðèòü, íî îíà íå õî÷åò åãî ñëóøàòü, èñòåðèò, óõîäèò ïðî÷ü ê ñâîåìó êîõàííîìó, âûäåëûâàþùåìó â êîôå ðàçíûå ïðèêîëû ñ åäîé (ïûòàåòñÿ çàëåïèòü äûðêó â ïîí÷èêå êóñêîì äðóãîãî ïîí÷èêà — ìîë÷èòå ôðåéäèñòû — èëëþñòðèðóÿ òåì ñâî¸ äóøåâíîå ñîñòîÿíèå). Ìåæäó íèìè ïðîèñõîäèò ïîëèëîã, â êîòîðîì âûÿñíÿåòñÿ, ÷òî Òîóá íåäîâîëüíà ïîâåäåíèåì Õàðëàíà. Âìåñòî òîãî, ÷òîáû ïîäîáíî Ãðåéñ â "Äîãâèëëå" âòèðàòüñÿ â äîâåðèå ê îòöó îí ïûòàåòñÿ ïîäîáíî Ãàððè èç "Ãàððè, äðóãà æåëàþùåãî âàì äîáðà" áàíàëüíî âûòîëêàòü îòöà âçàøåé è çàíÿòü åãî ìåñòî. Ýòî óñëîæíÿåò èõ îòíîøåíèÿ äî ïðåäåëà, âåäü îòåö íåäîâîëåí è íà ñòð¸ìå. Âïðåäü èì áóäåò ñëîæíî âñòðå÷àòüñÿ. Áîëåå òîãî, Òîóá âîâñå íå ñîáèðàåòñÿ ïîêèäàòü ðîäíîé äîì, â êîòîðîì åé ÿêîáû "ïëîõî". Åñëè âäóìàòüñÿ, òî îíà õîçÿéêà äîìà, çà íåé Ëîííè è îòåö, êóäà îíà íàõ ïîéä¸ò ñ ýòèì ñòðàííûì êîâáîéöåì? Íå óáèâàòü æå åéáî èíäåéöåâ!

Çàòåì íàì ïîêàçûâàþò, ÷òî ãåðîé Íîðòîíà — äíî ñ äâîéíîé ïîäêëàäêîé. Ñêîðåå âñåãî îí íå êîâáîåö íèõðåíà, à ïðîñòî ôàíàò êîâáîéñêèõ ôèëüìîâ, âîçîìíèâøèé ñåáÿ Äæîíîì Âåéíîì èëè êàê-òàì-åãî. Îñòàâàÿñü îäèí íà îäèí â íîìåðå ìîòåëÿ îí íà÷èíàåò ðàçãîâàðèâàòü ñàì ñ ñîáîé, ðàçûãðûâàòü çàáàâíûå ñöåíêè, ïèñàòü ïèñüìà òàèíñòâåííîìó Äæî, ïîìèíàòü äîëèíó êîòîðàÿ äëÿ Õàðëàíà — ôàòà-ìîðãàíà, ìàíÿùèé ïðèçðàê ðàÿ. Çàêàí÷èâàåòñÿ ýòî òåì, ÷òî ïîòåðÿâ ãîëîâó, îí ïîäîáíî ãåðîþ "Àïîêàëèïñèñà ñåãîäíÿ: ðåæûñ¸ðñêàÿ âåðñèÿ" ñòðåëÿåò â ñâî¸ îòðàæåíèå, íàêàçûâàÿ ñåáÿ ñàìîãî, íåêóþ ÷àñòü äóøè, â êîòîðîé ñêàïëèâàåòñÿ âñ¸, ÷åì îí íåäîâîëåí â ñåáå. Çðèòåëþ ñòàíîâèòñÿ ÿñíî, ÷òî ïðîøëîå ó ïàðíÿ ò¸ìíî, à íà äóøå òàðàêàíû.
